FDR and his Solution to the Depression

The greatest depression in the history of the US had been ravaging the working class for far too long. Many men had been unemployed for longer than 3,4 or 5+ years. Whole families were decimated as they had no source of income. Many scratched by on the relief of the government and soup lines of different charities. Work was impossible to come by and an actual wage that one could support a family on was extremely rare. This cycle of depression and unemployment only led to further problems. The government had to pay to help the millions of unemployed, and if the depression wasnt slowed down or if it didnt rebound soon, the government may not be able to support any unemployed. FDR was elected into office on the promise that he would make things better.
FDR's plan for making things better was through jobs. He wanted to get the unemployed off relief, and onto work relief. Work relief was where a person would work for usually low pay, instead of relief where unemployed just receive a small amount of money for doing nothing. FDR believed that working was necesary to get a man back on his feet. FDR implements a large amount of spending that has not been ever seen at this level. He sets asides million of dollars for the WPA. The public works administration creates new infastructure which provides thousands of jobs for workers. Even a small amount of pay could help the workers. The fact that they were getting paid and they were on the right track out of the despair of the depression helped improve the country's morale.
FDR indirectly helped farmers by creating legislation for the AAA. He gave funding for the farmer's in order to buy their undervalued cattle for an inflated price. They would then send the farmers more food which got the farmers back on their feet. FDR's plan of spending seems counter intuitive. By spending money and paying the people to work on projects, FDR is directly putting money back into the economy. People had to buy goods and food with the new money that the WPA and AAA put in their pockets. FDR's solution of public works created some recognizable infastructure today. The bay bridge was built thanks to the funds put into the WPA by FDR. His solution of putting money into public works and spending more to get the people back on their feet was a succesful strategy to help rebound the economy from the lows of the great depression.
