The Beginnings of the Radio
Having a radio nowadays isn't a big deal anymore, since we have much more advance technology that allows us to listen to our favorite songs, news, and updates through our phones and computers. Back in the 1920's that was not the case. Before the radio was created there were two other inventions that served a close purpose like the radio does. Those two inventions were the telegraph and the telephone. What continued the invention of the radio was the discovery of the radio waves, these waves have the capacity to transmit data, music and other things through the air invisibly.
Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian inventor proved the capacity of radio communication when he was able to send and receive his first radio signal in Italy, 1895. However, when the US was part of the first World War in 1917 all development that had to do with the radio had to be controlled by the US Navy, in order to prevent their enemies from getting any useful information that could be malice to the US. However, by 1915 the first speech would be transmitted from New York all the way to San Francisco. By 1925, President Franklin D. Roosevelt would be able to keep his supporters updated through the use of the radio. He would become the first president in which uses the radio in order to communicate with the public. The radio was one of the source of advertisement in which the president was able to use in order to gain and maintain supporters to vote for him.
The best part of the radio, was that the radio was free, you didn't need to pay in order to listen to a certain radio station and this was something that attracted more people. The invention of the radio also brought in profit to the stations because they were able to sell air time to companies that wanted to advertise their product. The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was able to have citizens from California and New York listen to the same program at the same time without having problems. This also allowed American citizens to listen to same sporting events, and people were able to listen to the games even though some of the stadiums and arenas might be far away from them.
By 1933, Edwin Howard Armstrong would be the one who invented the FM Radio, also known as the frequency -modulated radio. This invention improved the audio signal of the radio, and the improvements and changes of the radio were significantly seen. By 1954, a small Japanese company named Sony introduced the transistor radio. This invention would make it easier for others to mobilize and still be able to listen to the radio.
The invention of the radio has grown a lot since it was first invented around the 1920's. Through the radio we are still able to listen to the recent updates, songs, and other news. However the radio has developed a lot that we are able to listen to the radio stations through our laptops and cars as well, without having problems with the audio as it might have been back then.

I find it quite interesting how the use of the radio has developed in many different ways. Back then it was mainly used for communication and updates. Now in modern day life, the radio is used daily, but not for communication. It is now used for music, and radio talk shows. Which I find quite amussing. I can't wait for what the radio might do for us in the future and thank you Guglielmo Marcon for providing the capacity of radio communication.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you give us a full in-depth historical background of the radio. Do you think its helped contribute to various more projects as time passed by?

ReplyDeleteI really like how detailed this is, and I find it so extremely interesting how the radio back in the 1890's was some crazy amazing invention, and now it comes in every car and it is so standard for people to have.
ReplyDeleteI liked the description of radio and its beginnings, but it would be interesting to delve into the political implications. FDR was one of the first presidents to actually transmit speeches on radio and reach millions of Americans. How did the radio change the political landscape?
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting, especially the parts about how it increased American's freedom. It would also be interesting to hear about how it changed America socially and how it tied into other inventions and changes during the roaring 20's.
ReplyDeleteRadio 538 I must admit that your post is really interesting. I have spent a lot of my spare time reading your content. Thank you a lot! and if you need then contact us!
