Immigration in the 1920s

Immigration in the 1920's

The United States is known as place for opportunity in which one can reach the American Dream and be able to reach for higher success than from the place one was born in. After the First World War there were a lot of immigrants coming into the country, and the US wanted to have control to how many immigrants could come into the US. In order to have control to the number of immigrants that were coming from other places to the United States, the Immigration Act was passed in 1924. This act limited the pass to only 2% of immigrants from each nationality, and would be provided with immigration visas.
By 1917, the immigrants that were older than 16 needed to complete a Literacy Test, in which tested the understanding of reading in any language. Not only that, but the Chinese were also denied immigration visas through the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the Japanese government, voluntarily limited Japanese immigration to the US.

Many of the people that immigrated from their country, were mainly escaping religious, political, and racial prosecution, or were in the look for something better since their economic status might not have been really good, and were in the need to improve their economic status.

Immigrants coming in the US has had been a problem to other citizens when it came to work during the Industrial Revolution, and further on. The reason that immigrants were a problem to American citizens, is because since the factory owners did not pay a well wage for the Americans, the immigrants that would come in from different countries were willing to take the job no matter what the cost was because they only know that they want to have a job. This was bigger problem when the American workers wanted to make a statement that they needed to be payed better and treated better through strikes, but the immigrant workers wouldn't know what was going around them, so the jobs that were left vacant would be taken by the immigrants.

Another problem that the immigrants encounter was during the Great Depression, only because the people that were already living in the US were having problems finding a job and the new immigrants coming in would also be encountering the same problem as the American citizens.

  1. Interesting article, I especially like how you include such acts, as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Why do you think it was put into power, was xenophobia running high within the American government? Why did white Americans favour European immigrants more, than Asian immigrants?

  3. It was interesting to learn about why people decided to immigrate to the U.S. I would also like to know, when did the U.S. repeal the laws that restricted immigration so long?

  5. This is an interesting post because it explains the issues with immigration in the past and also the reason why so many people wanted to immigrate to USA. Do you think that the immigration problems that occurred have any influence over the problems occurring today?
