Foreign Policy

The 5 mentioned  are foreign policy goals of  "national security" in the vast majority of the world's nations is not a responsibility of foreign policy, which most often delegated to a department of state or perhaps to a department of foreign affairs.
National Security: protection of of a nation's borders and territories against invasion or control by foreign powers. Also helps determine how the US deals with other nations.  Free and Open Trade:Maintaining trade with other nations and preserving access to necessary natural resources have been basic goals of US foreign policy. This is an absolute necessity for the US.  World Peace: American leaders work for world peace because they believe it helps the nation avoid outside conflicts and aids national security. The US tries to help other nations settle disputes and has also supplied economic aid to at-risk countries, in part to prevent uprising and revolutions.  Democratic Governments: The US aids democratic nations and helps others create democratic political systems. With US help, many formerly Communist nations in Europe began to form democratic political systems in the 1990's. Concern for Humanity: Victims of natural disasters or starvation have looked to the US for help. In such times of crisis, the US has responded by providing food, medical supplies, and technology assistance for humanitarian reasons. At the same time, this aid serves the strategic interests of the US by maintaining political stability in the world.
National security is usually the main objective of a nation's department of defense.
It is usually true that a nation's foreign policy is coordinated with its defense. However, it only helps the department of defense. In fact the policies of defense are very often related to a department of state's policies. There is no question, however, that a department of defense's main job is to defend a nation.
Free & open trade policies are often the best policy for any nation, however, it needs to be pointed out that Japan's economy works very fine by not having one.
Trade policies in general are based upon the needs and requirements of each particular nation. World peace is usually the best policy of any country and the primary overseer would be a department of state or foreign affairs. History has recorded, however, that policies of aggression have been used in order to successfully obtain any given nation's goals.

  1. I liked how you talked about each one individually, but I think you could give examples of how these have been followed throughout history.
