After Hoover was widely disliked due to his response to the great depression, he lost to Franklin Roosevelt in the 1932 election. During his term Roosevelt spoke to the public to help with the depression morality, and he also declared a bank holiday. He created many reforms to help the relief effort, and was a great leader who helped America defeat enemies in the 2nd world war. He helped postwar efforts which became the United Nations, and was elected 3 terms. He married his distant cousin Anna and had 6 children with her. Anna encouraged him to employ more women into federal posts and blacks into federal job programs. In 1910 he became a democrat on the state senate in a highly republican county. 3 years later President Wilson appointed him the assistant secratary of the US navy for 7 years. Franklin owed much of his public appearance to his wife. She publicly spoke on his behalf in New York, and organized the women's division of the democratic party. In 1928 he won the position to be governor of New York. He set up the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration or TERA which helped find job for the unemployed during the great depression. His TERA program helped 1/10 families by 1932. Roosevelt became the democratic candidate in 1932 after2 years earlier being elected for governor. He broke tradition and accepted his nomination in person claiming he would bring a "new deal for the American people." In his 1933 inaugural address Roosevelt stated "This great nation will endure as it has endured will revive and prosper...The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." This was the first address to be broadcast on the radios all over the country. Roosevelt started his presidency by closing all the banks until congress could pass reform legislation. To ease the American peoples fear he regularly spoke at press conferences and on the radio. Once the emergency banking relief act was passed 75% of banks reopened within a week. In his first hundred days he also created the Agricultural Adjustment Administration known as the AAA, the Public Works Administration (PWA), the Civilian Conservations Corps (CCC), and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA.) He helped unemployment and also created financial system reforms such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp or FDIC. It was meant to protect depositors accounts. He also created Securities and Exchange Commission which was made to prevent the kind of stock market crash like the one that led to the Depression. When the economy was recovering he started the social security act, and works progress administration. He and congress also raised taxes on large corporations and the rich. During the 1936 election the supreme court opposed his new deal programs, so when he came up with a new plan and they rejected it, it was a huge setback in his career.

This is a very interesting article that gives a great overview of Roosevelt's life. While reading this I started to wonder how the US economy did during his 12 years of presidency. I found the graph below that shows in 1933 when Roosevelt was elected to office the economy made a huge recovery and continued to climb its way out of the depression under the leadership of FDR.
